About Batticaloa

Sunny beaches, lined with golden sand and crystal blue waters are not a rare sight in the small town of Batticaloa. Fondly known as Batti, once the proud capital of the eastern province, is currently known as one of the major commercial cities in Sri Lanka. The palm tree lined beaches and serene shallow lagoons are some of the star attractions of this town. Batticaloa is indeed one of the perfect travel destination for those who want some time away from the busy city life.

It's also known as the land of the singing fish where near the Kallady Bridge you will be able to hear an eerie sound emerging from the waters below. This has led locals to believe that the fish in Batti have an uncanny ability to sing.

There are many comfortable and luxury accommodation spots that have recently crept up in Batticaloa from where you can explore this beautiful stretch of land.


Getting into Batticaloa

Beautiful Batticaloa is located on an island that is about 100km away from Trincomalee and is about 300km away from Colombo. It's easily accessible by train, bus or a private vehicle. Note that buses and trains leave from the Colombo Fort railways station. The drive to the eastern city from Colombo takes about 6 hours if it's a private hire and a little longer if it's by a public bus.

There are also plenty of trains both luxury and normal leaving Colombo Fort railway station to Batticaloa. Check for the times and the schedule.

Getting around Batticaloa

The best way to explore Batti is on a bicycle or even by foot. However you can also travel around cities and towns by tuk tuk aka three wheelers. Note that it's a rule of thumb to fix the price before getting into a tuk tuk to avoid paying more than required unless of course the tuk has a meter. It will also help if you can ask locals how much it’s to get to your destination just to be sure you are paying the right amount. Having said that you can also travel by bus which is the most affordable way and you can ask locals to help you. The bus conductors will also be able to help you in any way that they can. Make sure you have small change in the form of coins and notes when going by bus instead of large notes. For example Rs.50, 20, 10 and a few coins.
