About James Tailor Museum

Tea being one of the hall marks of the Sri Lankan economy holds a prominent place in the life style of an average Sri Lankan. From the street sweeper to the wealthy businessmen of Colombo 7 it’s a humble beverage savoured by every Sri Lankan. Being a beverage of such importance it’s only natural that we would search for the story behind the beginning of the tea industry in our country. One of these beginnings is rooted in the story of Games Tailor, who is known to be the first one to introduce tea to Sri Lanka in 1867. Accordingly tea was first planted in the Peradeniya Botanical Gardens in Kandy and was then re-planted in the Lulkadura estate which is the first tea plantation for which Tailor was in charge. To honour the passion Tailor showed for tea, you can visit the Games Tailor museum which can be found on the estate and is supposed to host a variety of things that he had used to better the taste of tea.
